Creeper Trail
The Virginia Creeper Trail plays host to over 100,000 hikers, bikers and horseback riders each year. The scenic trail was once an old railroad track that ran from Abingdon Virginia to the Todd NC. The trail began as a path forged by Native Americans and was laid in railroad track in 1905. The last train ran the “Creeper Trail” in 1977. The tracks were taken up and the trail has sense been transformed into a remarkable Virginia hiking trail for visitors from around the country. The trail now extends 34 miles from Abingdon Virginia to the North Carolina line at Whitetop, Virginia. Come to the beautiful NC Blue Ridge Mountains in Ashe County. Stay in our Ashe County Cabin Rentals near the New River, Blue Ridge Parkway and charming West Jefferson.
The scenery is fantastic with rushing streams, still running creeks, amazing rocky ravines, majestic mountain views and breathtaking waterfalls. The most incredible feature of the trail are the 47 old railroad trestles that you cross along the trail. Many have streams running underneath and at least one is 100 feet tall. The Virginia Creeper Trail has only a slight grade which makes it a comfortable mountain hiking experience for almost anyone.
Don’t forget your camera because the Creeper Trail Virginia has an abundance of local wildlife and beautiful scenery that you will want to take home with you. Near mile marker 2, you will find a beaver dam by the pond. Other wildlife you might expect to see in the Virginia Mountains include rabbits, squirrels, deer, fox and very occasionally, a black bear. Whether you explore the Virginia Creeper Trail hiking, biking or on horseback, it is a part of your Virginia or North Carolina Vacation that you won’t want to miss.
